Clean water 2040

Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are our most vital natural resources. They define our history, our livelihoods, and our future. But statewide, 40% of our lakes and rivers are considered impaired by pollution or are unsafe for fishing or swimming. According to a 2014 report released by the MPCA, given current restoration efforts, Minnesota will see only a 7 to 8 percent improvement in water quality by 2034.

The Minnesota Legislature is currently debating a bill that allocates critical Legacy Amendment funds for on-the-ground work in restoring impaired waters and - for the first time - sets a goal for state agencies to make sure this work is designed to actually achieve clean water by 2040.
